Rebel, Moose & Elite Wing Tips

Post by Rick Harper » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:29 pm

G'day from "Down Under" everyone !

I have been trying to contact Dave Fife .... no joy so far :o(
So I may just get a set from MAM instead .....

OK .... Who HAS fitted a set of these new "Drooped" tips" ???

WHAT differences have you noticed ???

What do they do to Cruise & Stall speeds ???

How does it affect the side slipping capability of the Rebel ???
( I LOVE to side slip in to a short & crappy field)

What did they cost ???

These are items we ALL need to know !

Thanks

Rick Harper

Just wondered, since they seemed to feel Dave's tips would/could
be dangerous if not shortened .... Might be something for folks to
ask about before just installing these !

Bob,

Not sure what's MAM's position is on istalling the tips. I did not
shorten the tips during the installation. You may have to cut the front &
rear sections for tight fit, other than that, installed as received.

Hi Jeff !

Interesting ! I take it that the factory have changed their
position on tip length then ...... They specifically insisted that
Dave Fife make HIS Hoerner tips SHORTER - so they were no longer
than
the original Rebel wing tips. This was to "reduce the extra load
on the wing resulting from increased span"..... or do they
recommend shortening the droop tips too ??? ;-^)

Ken,

Droop tips are aprox 22 inches wide. They do add more to the
wing area.

Rebel, Moose & Elite Wing Tips

Post by Ken » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:29 pm

Ahh you noticed why I asked! However the explanation may be that
Hoerner's effectively do add extra effective wingspan beyond their
physical dimensions. The lift on a 14" hoerner tip is probably just as
much as the lift on a 22" droop tip. If that is indeed the reason, it
makes me wonder why the factory didn't go to hoerners.

I believe an additional plus for hoerner's should be greater stability
as any sideslip may tend to lift the low wing more than other types and
probably slightly less profile and induced drag.

Hi Jeff
How wide are those things? They look like they might add more
wingspan
than the original tips. They do look good!

Installation was fairly straight forward. Tips looked great on

Rebel, Moose & Elite Wing Tips

Post by Rebflyer » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:29 pm

Hi all,
I guess I'll throw in my .02 on the length as well. I was sitting with
Dave and Daryl when he insisted that the tips be shorter. His comment was the
extended arm would exceed the load applied when they did the distruction
testing. I wonder if they had any tips on when they did that! It sure would have
made the new molds easier if they could have been longer!
Also, has anyone done before and after testing? I've never seen any
numbers that support the droop tip theory. They gotta help if they are 22" long.!
Just a side note. I flew our annual Christmas present for orphans with
Dave, again, (about 7,000 presents delivered all over Michigan) and obviously we
had a chance to chat. Anytime extra has been non existent for him the last 2
months. He has not even been at home on the weekends as he has been with his
wife and her father. His father-in-law pasted away last Mon. I'll make no
excuses for him, but I will state he badly want to get back into his new
workshop. He'll get there.
Well, Merry Christmas to all

The photos on Murphy's web site showing the load testing did not have tips
on the wings... http://www.murphyair.com/SR3500%20testing.htm

Sorry to hear about Dave's loss, we just lost a close friend of ours in Iraq
a couple of weeks ago. Happened 5 days before he was supposed to come home
on leave to spend Thanksgiving with his family. We've been helping a lot
with his widow and his 2 boys, very hard for her when everyone around her is
busy getting ready for the holiday.

I'm not a beer drinker myself (breath deep bobp!), but this is one of the
best commercials I've seen in a long time!
http://www.dcsol.com/videos/bestcommercial.asf I just might go out and buy
a case of Bud and throw it in the fridge just to support this commercial.
