Preparations for Building, Manuals, etc.

Post by ravc1 » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:18 pm

I have read here, on more than one occasion, that builders have had issues with
their instruction manuals during the building process. My current plan is a
SR3500 so I'm saving, but it appears the manuals for this aurcraft have caused
difficulties for builders as well. I have also read of this being true with
the Elite. Are the Rebel instructions & plans any better?

I was thinking it might be worth my while (and others) to obtain a set of the
Rebel plans, etc and becoming familiar with these could be one form of
preparation for building a MAM kit. However, I'm hoping the participants on
this list can tell me if this a useful exercise or not.

Thanks,

Rick

Preparations for Building, Manuals, etc.

MAM used to sell their instruction manuals separately, don't know if they
still do. They also have the manual available on CD, so it would seem that
should be an easy/cheap way to get it. While building a Moose from the
SR2500 manual with the SR3500 upgrade addendum is a pain, it can certainly
be done. I always pull the associated chapters out of the binders before I
get started, and read through them side by side with a highlighter making
notes in the manual where the addendum affects a change... I also place the
addendum pages in the original manual chapter where they affect these
changes. This has worked very well for me so far, and I've had very little
confusion once I actually start building... I just have to take a while to
get a good mental picture of the build process before I start.

Beyond that, you have to think things through carefully because even
comparing the manual and the addendum doesn't tell you everything you need
to know... for instance. When building the horizontal stab, the manual
tells you to drill, debur, and rivet the stringers to the skin. The
addendum has you drilling out rivets from the skin/stringers/ribs, so that
doublers can be added. What you want to do in the instance is put the
doublers in place where they belong, run a sharpie around the outside... go
ahead and drill the stringers with the doubler in place, but DO NOT rivet
the stringers inside the outline. You'll want to be able to pull the
doubler off for deburring after you drill for the ribs. Only after all
holes in the doubler are ready to rivet will you be able to rivet the
stringers in this area.

To ensure little details like this don't get missed, I keep several sharpies
on the work bench, and write all over the part that I'm building to ensure I
don't paint myself into a corner. A quick wipe down with acetone and all
the marks are gone.

I agree with Mike that there are instances where you end up drilling out
what you did several weeks ago despite reading the manuals well in advance.

My best tip is to assemble as much with skin pins as possible until you are
certain there is nothing else to be added in the area before you gat out
your rivet gun.

It's also been a great help to me to have a whole load of photo's of other
peoples completed aircraft (Elite and Rebel in my case) to compare an area
on mine with the photo's of others to see if they look the same before
riveting.

By all means get the books....it's great fun planning ahead.
