oil cooler for IO-540

Post by Tim Saxton » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:06 pm

I've heard that some SR/Moose are experiencing high temperatures with the oil cooler provided with MAM's engine kit, which I believe is a NDM 20003A oil cooler. Is anyone using this oil cooler and what needs to be done to avoid over temperature problems? Any other examples of successful oil cooler installations? I'm wondering if I should use a larger oil cooler or if it's just a matter of directing air flow to the right places.

Thanks,
Tim

Sounds small ! The 20002 is what is supplied for the O-320's by MAM, but the
20003 is perfect for the O-320 when it comes right down to it.

Tim,
Beware the original MAM installation pictures show one oil cooler mounted on
the rear engine baffle, the airplane actually had a second one mounted on
the others side. MAM had a problem with just the one cooler, as of a couple
of years ago the pictures were not updated.

Hi Al,

I've reviewed the pictures of your engine on Goflyamoose. Does your setup
work well? Which oil cooler are you using?

Al Paxhia

oil cooler for IO-540

Post by Al Paxhia » Sat Feb 18, 2012 2:06 pm

Hi Tim,
That setup works ok for wheels not well for floats. I have changed the air
inlet twice since that picture. The best location is pulling the air from
the rear of the pressure side of the cowl (again, this is for float
operations) that is where I have it now. I find the oil temp is 20 - 25
degrees cooler on wheels. I don't remember the model of the cooler, but it
was the model recommended for the IO540. The fin area is 6" x 6", there is a
plenum chamber on the back of the cooler, and hot air exits through the side
of the cowl. If I did it again I would mount it on the lower firewall and
exit through the bottom opening of the cowl or I would go with the smaller
coolers and use two, one on the back of the baffle each side like MAM. I do
know the cooler I have is too large to mount directly on the baffle.
