Filling rivets

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:51 am

Not yet Jesse. I'm based in southern Ontario. Maybe one of these years I'll
get to go rambling with Bob to the coast. Or go fishing up on hudson bay :)

Hi Jesse My rebel is mostly polished and like Bob I've tried almost every
product available. I sure hope none of it is corrosive because there's a
little dab of it stuffed down each mandrel hole. Whether it stops rust or
not I don't know but if there's any rust it certainly doesn't show anywhere
on my plane.

I am planning at this time to leave my Rebel mostly unpainted. If I keep
it
waxed or polished will enough of whatever product I use get into the
rivet
holes to stop rust? I'm sure I will be in salt water.
Thanks
Jesse

Filling rivets

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:52 am

The easiest way to fill rivets is to just use a normal RV1410 rivet and a
cup of epoxy. Dip the sharp tip of the rivet mandrel in the cup, while
holding the rivet end, and touch to the mandrel break off hole. Go over the
whole skin section and come back once it has settled and dab again and
again. Usually takes three or four passes until they are filled and then
just buff after dry with scotchbrite. Howard had "passers by", and on the
rebuild (s) me, do this to give the appearance of solid rivets. Works well
and doesn't effect the ability to easily drill them back out when the time
comes.

Cheers,
Wayne

Hi Alvin !

I agree with "most people" ! ;-) If you are worried about it, be
sure to paint the Rebel using a HVLP spray system - this uses a lot
of paint at low pressure, so it just flows into the rivets & seals
them. Old high-pressure paint sprayers blow so hard that the paint
doesn't get into the tops of the rivets well.

If you are dipping each rivet in epoxy before intalling &
pulling, a film of epoxy will be pulled up around the stem, stopping
corrosion there. Rebels have been outside for almost 15 years
with no problems - I've only ever seen a couple of rust spots in
rivets. These are visually unattractive, but it could be 60+ years
before they become a structural concern .... and then, you just
replace the rivet !

If you really want to fill the rivets, some folks have used
veterinary syringes (large needle) filled with epoxy primer,
and put a drop into each rivet. VERY time-consuming .... this
was used by one builder to 'entertain' tourists who visited his hangar
while he was working - he handed them a syringe & put them to work ! :-)
Few stayed beyond one fill-up ! ;-) :-)
