Fuel Cap Locatoin

Hi all, I am working on my 50 gallon fuel tank,that's 5 bays out and was
wondering were the best location for the filler neck.I was thinking does
it have to go way out bay 5 on the wing or can I put it closer in?

Bill,

Are you installing flush caps or ones with a filler neck? I think they put
the flush caps out at the high point, but if you have a filler neck you can
go at least into the outboard corner of bay three and still get the tank
basically full.

We have the 60 gallon per side and the MAM installed flush caps are in bay 5
(they didn't use bay 6 because the strut is at the high point on the
camber). I installed additional caps with filler necks in bay three and
have steps and handles on the fuselage so I can fill without a ladder if
needed. Ron K's is this way and it seems to fill almost to the top with the
inboard caps.

I was going to ask the same question for a Rebel. I have 4 bays per wing.
Can I put the filler in bay 3, Or is it still reachable on floats in bay 4?

I have flush MAM caps, so I guess the best area to install them is in bay 5
at the high point. Is that right?

Jesse, I believe the bays are identical on the Moose and Rebel. I suspect
one of the Rebel guys on floats will speak up but I think it is a bit of a
stretch out to bay 4 from the fuselage step? Of course you can sit on the
wing and slide out, maybe go for a swim though <grin>

Bill, I would say yes to 5th bay for max fuel with flush caps. However, you
wouldn't lose much capacity if you choose to come in a bay either.

If I had it to do over I wouldn't get the flush cap option. The way they
are installed on my fast build wings they are below flush and will catch a
lot of water. The cap is airtight so I am not worried about water getting
in when closed, I'll just use a towel if it has rained before opening.

I've got mine on the last bay (4th?), and it is reachable for
fuelling and checking fuel with a dipstick from the step on my
front float strut. Also, by having it more outboard, it makes for
easier fuelling from a dock or ladder, without having to reach
over your float. And as it's been said here before, that filler
neck and cap sure makes it easier to hang on to when reaching up
there.

whether I have 3 or 4 bays. Anyway, I have the standard 44 US gal
tanks, and it is on the far front corner of the last bay. If it
was further out, I would indeed have trouble reaching it from the

If you have 44 gal then I believe you only have 3 bays per wing. Thanks for
the info. I think I will put my filler in the 3rd bay for ease of fueling
and accept some slight loss of capacity, if any. Probably won't be topping
it off much anyway.

Correct ...being in wing construction still and seeing quite a bit of the
innards, I can assure you that this is 3 bays.

If you wanted to complicate things, maybe just a little, you could put the
air vent at the outboard end of bay #4 instead of in the fuel cap. Probably
not worth it, but an idea -- theory being that to *really* top it off, the
filler neck would hold the gas to the same level as the top of bay number 4.
This assumes the standard filler neck/cap instead of recessed.
