Hello everybody!

A friend of me who owned a pristine condition Lake amphibian just bought a 3 axes auto-pilot... (when you have money...). He offer me the single axe auto pilot that was in it up to now. They usually name that a "wing leveler". It include the directionnal gyros, the servo and the hardware. I have think about it for my Rebel for 2 reason: could be fun for couple hours trip, but the most important is as a safety device; if by mistake I go in cloud or in white "xxxxxx" (I do not remember the ?&*%?& word!), I could use it to help me go out of trouble. Do you think it will be be difficult to install in a Rebel and how much should I pay....

Sorry Jean...couldn't get a week long pass from the Penetang mental asylum!!
They'll only let me sit in the front yard on the benches..... to watch the
jets go by !! LOL :O))

I assume the Rebel has an aileron cable run on each side next to the
fuselage rib above the pilot and copilot's head like the Super Rebel? If
so, and if the servo is made to attach to a cable, it shouldn't be too
difficult. Someone on this list has a servo mounted there on a Super Rebel.
I've always thought the servo mounting is the hardest part. As for price,
as far as I can tell the cheapest single axis autopilot available is the
Navaid
(http://web.archive.org/web/200304111259 ... rdware.htm)
listed at $1300 although there is some question about whether they are still
in business. The Trutrak Digitrak is listed at $1550 on the Aircraft Spruce
website (http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/a ... gitrak.php) and is
another possibility. That should give you an idea about how much to offer,
although if your friend has an STEC System 20, they are much more expensive,
certified, and can be upgraded later with altitude hold if you want. I
wouldn't spend much money on a Century but that's just my opinion.

In my honest opinion...If you're concerned about flying into the soup
accidentally one day..... install a vacuum horizon and an electric turn
coordinator before I went to the bother of a wing leveler....but everyone
has their own wants/needs/preferences and why they are called homebuilts!. I
prefer to do the flying and not be taken for a ride.

Rebel has no cables in the aileron/flaperon system. All push pull tubes and
torque tubes. Cables for elevator and rudder.

Oh well. You have to go with a different type of servo then, and I have no
idea where the best location would be. I'll leave that in the capable hands
of the Rebel builders. I also tend to agree with Wayne about doing the
driving myself, although it does come in handy while folding maps, pouring
coffee, getting rid of processed coffee, etc., let alone inadvertent IFR.
Of course, if you did a good job building and rigging, you still shouldn't
need the otto for that. Hmmm, I wonder if I did a good job making sure I
had a level wing before final riveting the skin? Guess I'll find out. :-)

There was (is??) a description of Brian's installation of a Navaid servo
on the ailerons of a Rebel in the archives. It was mounted near the
pivot point of the flap bar (behind the pilot seat) and connected to the
aileron bellcrank (behind the pilot seat) with a push rod. I might be
able to find a photo if one is not in the archives.
