Spar cracking at Aileron spade

Post by gerry » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:09 am

I have installed another hinge at the outboard rib of the aileron spade and
the inboard rib of the wing tip. This is quite a bit less work than the mods
requested by MAM. I believe that this is a better fix as the spade is now
supported on both sides. This fix does not require removal of the wing tip or
any skins. You have to remove the aileron and using a laser lite sight thru
the hinges to get the pivot point for the AIL25 bushing .Rivet the bushing in
place. Then blue the end rib of the aileron spade and replace the aileron. I
have the wide spades so I cut an extra 2 1/4" inspection hole in the spade
and in the fiberglass tip.Install a AIL26 steel bushing into the brass
bushing and then using a 1/4" piece of drill rod sharpened at one end slide
it thru the bushing using the new inspection hole in the wing tip and mark
the pivot point on the aileron spade rib. Remove the aileron and drill and
bush as above.I installed a .040" doubler on both ribs as well for extra
support. Now you have an extra hinge supporting the aileron spade. I am sure
I am not the first to do this mod but I have pics if anyone is interested.

Gerry,
Is your "added bearing" fix for the Moose or Elite. We are building an
Elite and I don't remember seeing anything on the MAM site or Rebel list
regarding spar cracking.
Thanks,
Rallph Baker

Spar cracking at Aileron spade

Post by David Ricker » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:09 am

Hi Guys

I think we would like to see the pics posted to the archive and given the
similarity I think there is a growing group of Elite builders that would be
interested to see what the mod looks like too.

Thanks

Spar cracking at Aileron spade

Post by gerry » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:09 am

This fix is on my Moose with droop tips . As I have not flown yet I do not
have any cracking. I looked at MAM's fix and talked to a gentleman in Ontario
who did some what the same as I have and he stated he has not had a problem
since. Not sure if this "fix" would be good for the elite but I would have to
assume so. The problem seems to be the spade hanging out past the last
hinge . With an extra hinge point the spade no longer hangs out as it is
supported on both sides.
