tailwheel attachment

Post by Ralph Baker » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:02 am

Tom,
Every tailwheel installation I have ever seen has the tail wheel pivot
axle (not the wheel axle) perpendicular to the ground. That said, when
we installed our Elite tailwheel spring in the second hole from the top
the axle was tucked well under. In other words, it sloped to the front
from top to bottom. I talked to MAM and was told to use lower holes.
If that was not satisfactory bend the tube spring. The bottom hole is
too close to the bottom for comfort and the second hole from the bottom
still leaves the axle at about 8 degrees forward at the bottom. I do
not want to bend the tailspring because that brings the tailwheel to
close to the rudder to cope with my landings. Also, don't have a way to
bend and assure it doesn't kink.

I questioned a very experienced airworthiness inspector and he said fly
it first and only change if it needs correction. Maybe I better put
wheels under the wing tips in case it gets squirrely on first flights
(some time off).

I'll let someone else comment on the control cables.
