Donations vs Costs

Post by Mike Davis » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:01 am

A couple of people have asked, so I thought I'd give everyone an update on
the donations... I have received $592.00 in donations averaging $19.73 per
person! Thanks so much to everyone who has given.

Now something that I have never done before... didn't really want to know I
guess... is sit down and setup a spread sheet detailing all of the expenses.
Things that I wouldn't have really thought about my "nearly CPA" wife helped
with (she'll start sitting her exams this summer). I generally only
considered those expenses that sent a monthly/yearly bill that were solely
related to the site... never worried about stuff like electricity. Until
recently I was running another server that was nearly identical to mine for
a friend at the south pole. When we disconnected his server our electric
bill dropped $50 a month! Now he had more hard drives in his and a bigger
power supply... and of course we use our server for a number of personal
things... so we arbitrarily entered $20 month in our calculations.

Anyway, with only a couple of hardware updates this year, software
maintenance expenses, domain registration, Upgrade to DSL with static IP,
and other associated costs, we figured the expenses out at $1105.40, or
$92.12 a month. The hardware updates this year consisted of 2 new hard
drives after the crash in May for about $175, a new RAID controller in Nov
for about $70, and the new CPU's in Dec for about $180. So only about $425
of that was hardware.

My wife's comment when we were done... sure glad you enjoy this so much!

Thanks again to everyone who chipped in, and as with the address book... if
there's anything you think might improve the site, let me know so I can look
into it.

Mike
