MURPHY 3500
MURPHY 3500
Mike - You are ahead of me but I have noticed that Scott Aldrich did an
excellent job of beefing up the area near the tail stinger - he is also
advising me to add Cessna type gussets at the tail cone attach areas. He is
getting some of his ideas from some of the Anchorage crew -
I am just starting to rivet the stringers to the skins - any tips there??

Britt, Scott, anyone have pictures of these suggestions...? tail stinger
area???
As to beefing up - in the forward door posts area - we are using 0.063
skins for our outside skins, and have also decided to change the Fus300
posts to heavier .125 6063 channel (couldn't find 6061channel locally)

MURPHY 3500
I found 1/8 inch thick 2 inch channel at the local metal supplier that fit
perfectly for the front door post. Seems to be a common stock item. That's
what I used. I looked at the materials and strength used in the gear
torsion box area and the square carrythrough across the top of the fuselage
and decided to make the door post channels at least as strong. Of course, I
was thinking about the Chevy V8 going on the front too. It's probably
overkill.

MURPHY 3500
Just posted a few pictures of the aft tail stinger external wraps that were
mentioned by Britt.
Also a picture showing the hat channel that we added to the entire tail cone
in the lower corner wraps. We have seen one Moose with wrinkles in 4 or 5
of the bottom corner wraps. None on the top. Could have been due to hard
landing but that is unknown, aircraft has never been on wheels just floats.
If I didn't have a fast build I would consider having thicker bottom corner
wraps for the whole tail cone made up.
We added an inspection hole just aft of the elevator bellcrank in the center
of the cargo area floor. You can slide the elevator pushrod out if needed.
The pushrod is already installed on the fast build and we needed to remove
it. We had to enlarge all of the holes in the bulkheads that the elevator
pushrod passed through so we could increase the elevator throw. You could
trim them with out removing but it would be a hassle. Not pictured but we
added a small inspection hole in the bottom front to access the forward
elevator pushrod to torque tube attach bolt.
For bb44bb, another thing I would do is make full length channel
reinforcement in the corner wrap right behind the main gear fittings. MAM
has the small drag brace service bulletin due to gear movement with the
larger wheels. We believe that is way to wimpy, MAM never really tested
their brace as they went back to the smaller wheels and then right to
floats. We added a brace about twice as long as the service bulletin one
plus as brace that runs all the way back to the next bulkhead (the one that
holds the step tube).
Actually knowing what I know now I would throw away the entire MAM gear and
remake the gear box completely different. Murphy actually helped Jim Moore
do this, they made him new gear legs, new steel attach brackets, full
length doublers at least 1/8" thick across the entire gear box, MAM just
doesn't talk about it.
