zinc chromate primer

What is the best way to remove dried primer from aluminium surfaces
that will not be painted over? Can it be buffed out so it matches up with
the surrounding aluminium?

Don't know if anyone ever replied to this Allen... we had some luck using a
straight ended exacto blade on Mike Kimball's SR... you have to be careful
though not to scratch the aluminum.

To add, when I was painting my airplane the shop owner made me scrape every
splash of epoxy...from around EVERY rivet before we shot primer. Reason
being the area these splashings were on (from inserting wet rivets and not
cleaning up afterwards) was not prep'd. Therefore these would be prone to
lifting once the paint was on. We used utility scraper blades held in our
bare hands...just make sure you grab the right side of the blade before
pushing! Hard lesson...but been really careful on every wing/fuselage
since.... to use lots of acetone and clean everything completely before it
dries now. It took over a week to scrape around every rivet!!

Allen...in your case I'd be tempted to try paint stripper on it before it
gets much harder. Tal-strip 2 ,Mar-hide Brand-$40/gal seems to work the
best..available at most auto jobbers.

I did the paint remover, careful not to get it all over the rivet head, and
that worked well. I also never let it dry anymore...

I am going to paint but you should be able to buff out the whole thing if
you are not.

I have had good luck removing excess primer after it has dried using a
piece of 1/4 x 1/4 x 2-inch acrylic plastic. File one end at a slant
(about 45 degrees) so it can pop the primer off. The plastic is not
hard enough to scratch the aluminum, although is sometimes leaves a
mark if you press hard. I would not want to use any kind of metal
scraper on aluminum.

I softened dried zinc chromate with a "brew" that I made in my factory. One
part each of MEK, toulene, ethyl acetate & butyl acetate. Wet a cloth with
this "brew" and leave draped over the zinc chromate. After a couple of
minute the zinc chromate will be very soft and can be wiped off. Note well
please use the "brew" in a very well ventilated area, otherwise you will get
"high" on the fumes.
