Moose - cracking under outboard aileron hinge bracket

Post by Scott Aldrich » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:31 am

I just posted pictures in the archives (S/M wings) showing cracks forming
under the left outboard aileron hinge bracket. It is in the left wingtip rib
flange and rear spar of an M14 powered Moose. The aircraft has about 100
hours with a two blade prop.

These are similar to the cracking that Murphy had in the demonstrator on the
outboard stab and elevator hinge area. I can not remember if they mentioned
the wing tips at that time or not. I sent this info to Brian already.

I only found cracks on the left tip not on the right. The right may be less
prone to the cracking due to rib flange being out instead of in.

I am going to add angle reinforcement similar to what we did to the tail.

Once you check yours can you let us know if you are running a two blade or
three blade prop?

Thanks
Scott

Below is Brian's response on the stab and wingtip hinge cracking. I uploaded
the pictures he sent of MAM's new fix to the archive. Looks like they are
using a beefier angle than I did.

Hi Scott,

Yes, the yellow aircraft had identical problems and so did Ryan Mowats. We
fixed it with an 'L" piece put into the corner.

Attached are photos of the official Stab. fix for the similar problem in
this area, which will be the basis of the official wing fix.

Regards
