To Wayne and all concerned:

Comming back from Osh.,I landed at Int. Peace Gardens border crossing south
of Brandon Manitoba. Landed fine, tail wheel touched momentarily first, then
the mains, rolled straight a couple hundred feet, with winds light and
variable things don't go straight forever and I started going slightly left,
applied full right rudder and brake and I kept going left. I had landed
fairly slow so that at this point I was not going very fast. Having turned
about 110* I left the runnway onto slightly slopping ground with high weeds.
There ws no ditch or ruts, the transition was very smooth.I kept going left
and stopped after having turned 190*.Just before I stopped the fuse buckled
in front of the empanage between bulkhead "E" and solid bulkhead fus 36. If
the tail wheel had not stuck turning left it never would have happened but
also being that the tailwheel commited me to keep turning left, if the
tailwheel had broken loose and free wheeled following the tail around this
would probably not have put a side load on the fuse and I may have just
stopped with no damage. With the tail wheel skiding sideways this of course
put a side load on the fuse. The tail was basically torn off the fus. With a
few cuts with the tin snips it was off.
I am thankful this was all that happened. All the damage was confined to
between these two bulkheads. Had I been going faster I probably would have
tipped onto a wing tip or nosed over.
I now have the repair almost complete. Bought fus 29's and a new fus 36 from
MAM, Made the side skins and it looks good.

I called MAM and explained what happened and the person on the other end new
exactly what had happened before I finished my story. The release sleeve
(that 1/4" square piece witht the spring on the end) that allows the wheel
to free-wheel was burred on the end as well as the round piece that it
releases out of was also burred. Things got jammed up here.

Bought a Scott 3200. Looks really good and I'm sure it will work as good as
it looks.

Will keep you all posted when I'm up again.

At least I don't feel left out anymore, as you all know if you fly a tail
wheel there are those that have ground looped and those that are going too.
Don't mean to sound pessimistic and I certainly don't wish anyone bad luck.
Before I'd go up again I would have a good look at my tailwheel. I mean take
it apart and look at it. As someone said, get rid of it and save yourself
the grief.

Good luck to all

Murray Cherkas

Murray, you know that you made the NTSB reports I bet?! Had a list member
question if I knew about this and thought you might want to air your "dirty
laundry" so others can learn from this experience.
