All the traffic about the SR wing options got me thinking I should order my
wing kit, and wondering if I should get the bigger tanks for it. The
capacity goes up to 55 gal. with the extra right? That's about 6 hours I
guess. At this point I'm thinking, why not. Any down-side to having extra
tankage, besides more proseal, and a couple hundred bucks? Any problems like
those discussed with the SR where you have to box in the strut attach?
Wayne, what's the status of the wing on your parts plane?

Jesse...gotta ask yourself how often you're going x country vs flying around
home. 6 hours on wheels is over 600 KMiles. Standard 22/23 gallon tanks x 2
give you almost 5 hours with a leaned out O-320 x 150 HP...do you need more
than that??
As for the wings in my "parts kit"....they are complete (as in parts...NOT
built) BUT have .050 main spars and rear spars with lightening holes (new
set of 4 proper 1650lb spars from MAM are approx $1000/cdn last time I
checked). Other than that they are identical to 1650 wings. I only have one
wing tank BUT pretty sure I have another solid rib hanging on the wall and I
know that I have at least 3 spare tank bulkheads on the shelf. I could also
cut the .040 tank skins from raw stock for the 2nd wing (to what ever size
you wanted!). YES I can beat (by more than enough that should cover most if
not all of the shipping) the $6570 US price showing on MAM's website for the
wing kit and if you say yes VERY QUICKLY (as I have a 13' long crate leaving
Chilliwack VERY shortly) I will get the new main and rear spars as well to
swap before I send to you.

both wing tanks complete, parts wise. You'd get everything and maybe then
some that comes in a kit from MAM. Take me a bit of time to go thru the
hardward and rivet count, tank rivet count etc to put it all together...but
don't think I'd miss anything and if I did you know where to find me!

Some thoughts to expand on Wayne's reply a bit.
I think 3 bays for fuel is common on the ultra light Rebel.
The standard Rebel uses 6 bays (3 in each wing)
Wayne has quoted 23 gal per 3 bay but some folks report 24 gal which
rounds things nicely to 8 gal per bay for calculating.
With an alternate engine such as my Subaru I used 5 bays total for about
40 gal and even that will probably be too much but it should be
acceptable if the airframe ever goes back to a conventional engine. I
would tend to consider a couple of gal per wing as not reliably useable
but others may comment on that with more authority.
You can also add a small header tank in the fuselage to separate slugs
of air from fuel and make almost all of the fuel useable. A header
should avoid the temptation to try to save (or mis-manage) extra fuel in
one tank for landing/go around. Who needs something else to do if
pushing the fuel that far? I also put a float in my header with an "OH
Shxx" warning light to warn me that the engine is going to quit in
about 12 minutes. There has been an occasional report (rare) of
hicupping while side slipping with low tanks - a header should avoid
that. Some folks don't like the idea of any extra fuel in the fuselage
but that's where many successful bush planes put the fuel and I believe
fuel starvation/mis-management is still the most common cause of falling
out of the sky prematurely.

extended tanks are the only one I would not repeat. The only
justification would be long flights into areas with poor gas / no gas
where the return flight was a consideration. That is offset by either
leaving the fuel level down with increased condensation or always flying
heavier than needed. There is additional building difficulty (although
not major) and increased leakage possibilty around the spar cap area
with the extended tanks. My evaluation is "not worth the cost, effort,
potential leaks, and ongoing considerations".
