Bolt Length ?

Post by Brent Blue » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:31 am

Gentlemen:

Simple question. I was installing the V brace required for the Moose and
the bolt lengths are obviously too long. The only way to make them work is
to use multiple washers.

Any reason why I cannot substitute shorter bolts and not use the washers in
this and other areas where this happens? I hate deviating from the manual
since I am an obviously inexperienced builder.

Thanks.

Bolt Length ?

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:31 am

Legal installation of a bolt, to AC43, is no more than THREE washers on an
assembly and this is preferably 1 under the head and 2 under the nut.
Anything else is nonsense...and unsightly to boot! You have to be your own
inspector when it comes to this. Also no more than 3 threads showing on bolt
after tightening/torquing the nut and of course no less than 1 thread
showing or it will be rejected at final inspection. Also note that sometimes
three threads showing on some bolts has the nut bottomed out against the
unthreaded section of the bolt...so always a good idea to check how far a
nut can go on before bottoming and compare this to what you have in your
assembly to confirm you are good to go.

A dozen or so "thin" washers on hand of each size can be priceless to
achieve this thread count in some areas. ie: 960-416L vs the normal 960-416.
The L's are half the thickness in most cases.

Cheers,
Wayne
