hi,
we are ready to taxi test our 1800 amphibs. what are the tire
preassures you suggest? i skimmed the manual today and did notsee a
suggestion. we have the chen tires that came with the kit.
what did anyone use for step material? our first try with some
relatively small alu angle seems a bit flexible under our 200+ weight.

Andy/Clint...65psi mains and 45psi nose wheels. Make sure you indeed have
the 11 x 4.00 x 5.00 EIGHT (8)ply Chen Cheng's. I know at one time there was
some 4 ply floating around and they are not good enough!
For step material I spend the extra$$ and use the Kenmore Air step
extrusion. Last time cost me $32/ft Cdn but it's the cats meow. Have seen
some other nice steps done using alum checker plate welded to form the right
angle.

Hi Andy & Clint !
I vaguely recall using about 55 lb. for both, but
don't trust my memory ....
Don't forget that the brakes will hardly work until
they are 'seated in' - so use a LARGE area for taxiing, and
do a lot of 'donuts' while dragging one brake, then the other,
for a half-hour or so, to seat them in. Then avoid using them
<really hard> for a few more hours ...
Those who haven't had the joy yet - you NEED the brakes
to STEER on amphibs ! :-)
You will LOVE the way the Rebel handles on amphibs !!!
You can turn shorter than on wheels, and NO crosswind will ever
be a bother ! (I've landed with 45 degrees at 35 mph, gusting 47 !)

Thanks for the tire info. i will crawl under and double check our
numbers tomorrow. at 45 rear and 45 front, the rear/main tires sure
looked like they were low. we are currently based at a long asphault
airport and we really do not want to wipe out our tires in our first
few taxi tests. thanks for the brake break-in procedure suggestions. we
have never operated a plane with brake only directional control. i have
always just used them lightly until i needed them for real and it has
worked out ok. we will try your suggestions for sure.

back.

45psi definitely too low in the mains! If you look closely when they have
enough air in them the outer ribs edge will just lift off the ground. If too
soft it is touching. I find 65psi works perfect and 45 in the nose seems to
be about right so they have a bit of cushion in them and don't shimmy too
much.
As for the brakes...as Bob learned here test flying Howard's and trying to
stay on the hump of my runway...the brakes are ABSOLUTELY useless until you
make a few trips up and down your strip at about 1500/1600 rpm dragging the
brakes. Let them cool and do it again and again until you notice the
definite increase in braking capacity. If you don't do this they will glaze
on the first landing/braking and then you'll be in trouble!

You will want 65 on the mains. Also make sure you have enough
wavy washers in the front and they are pretty tight, or you will
be having shimmy.
