Need to strengthen exhaust joints

Post by Ted Waltman » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:20 am

I just posted a picture to area 111 - S/M Engines showing my idea to
strengthen the joints where two exhaust stacks meet. The existing
collar used to join two exhaust elements together is prone to loosening
and allowing joints to separate. Idea would be to spot weld two small
bolts; one above/below collar and safety wire them together.

I spent a considerable amout of time this a.m. trying to get several
joints to butt evenly together. Eventually I came to the conclusion
that I'd have to take all of them off, or at least loosen them, get all
my friends to join me to hold them in place, and then try to tighten
them all up without any of them moving--impossible. Hence, one will
most likely always have a gap between joints that the collar covers.
While it is good that the collar covers any minor gap, having such a gap
means there's that much less material for the collar to "squeeze" onto
and hold during the inevitable vibration caused by running the engine.

I don't know if others have experienced such joints separating over
time, causing the exhaust to "hang" by the portion attached to the
cylinder exhaust port, leading, eventually, to such cracking as I had
happen recently. I'm convinced that without some such solution, the
temporary screws I have in one joint, or, better yet, my idea of
safety-wiring, that I'll see a cracked exhaust at the cylinder attach
point again.
