Boat OPERATOR Licence required in Canada for all boats under

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:19 am

Just a friendly reminder that a boat operators licence is required now for
EVERY Canadian that operates a boat under 4 meters in length.

I took a good @##!*#&* reaming from the OPP yesterday while in my Portaboat
that I (by being arrogant/ignorant since I've had my own motor boat since
being 5 yrs old) felt was not effected by this Federal law. My boat measures
13' 2" with the plastic bow pulpit on . Figuring that a meter is
approximately 39"... that means any boat under 13 feet is mandated by this
law! The police weren't buying the plastic decorator plate and measured my
boat as 12' 8" and gave me a pretty hard time.

Here is a link so you can take your boater exam on line, or find out were to
send proof of another acceptable safety course taken prior to this
legislation, to get your card.

I also got a stearn warning last year in New York state, from a nice State
Trooper in the patrol boat at Delta Lake State park. He pulled up beside me
while I was trolling and asked where my registration #'s where for the side
of the boat. I told him that any boat in Canada operated by less than a 10HP
motor (reason Johnson/Evinrude made 9.9's and not 10's!) did not need to be
registered. He told me "a dock with a trolling motor on it needed to be
registered in NY" and cautioned me for my next trip into New York State. We
had a good converstion about that and my unique boat and he went on his way.
Damn good thing he didn't ask to see my NY State fishing license!! :o))

Cheers, Wayne
