High Engine Temp.-912

Post by Aurele Lavigne » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:27 pm

I`ve been having trouble with my engine temp. in my Rebel. Even with the oil cooler supplied by Rotech I`m running in the 270`s F, and water temp at about 90 C. I`ve talked to Murphy and they indicate that the cowling is fine the way it is based on their field experience. I`m using a 15w50 full synthetic oil but that`s just for added protection. Of course my oil temps have dropped off with the weather and this problem existed primarely in the hottest summer days, but I`d still like to oin point the problem. I ususally mix my antifreeze at 70/30.

Does anybody have any suggestions where I should troubleshoot.

Thanks, Aurele

Aurele, have you actually checked your senders and gauges with a know medium(like boiling water at 212deg) to be certain you are not chasing a ghost! The AULA rebel we built and sold did good to get the oil up to 200F and the cooling system matched!(using the supplied Murphy cowling) We see this also in my wifes Zenair CH701 with a 912, that is that the oil and cylinder temperatures usually match and in this case at approx 210F.

Is that mixture 70% water and 30% glycol? If it is the other way around it
may cause some problems, my opinion. I don't think that would be 100% of the
oil temp problem though.

High Engine Temp.-912

I agree completely !! Our 912 has the oil temp about 175 degrees, and
the water at 165, through most of the summer. The absolute reading could
be off by a fair bit, but as long as they stabilize to ABOUT the same temp,
everything is likely OK. There were problems with the accuracy of the
factory sensors on some engines...

Hmmmmmm.... "oil cooler supplied by Rotech" - I thought they recommended
TWO coolers..... We use the oil cooler supplied by Murphy - it was
less expensive, and works well.

High Engine Temp.-912

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:27 pm

I seem to recall that Rotax suggest a 50/50 mixture ...... But you're
right, this shouldn't affect the oil temp much.

Where is the oil cooler mounted ?? Does it have good exit for the air ??

High Engine Temp.-912

Post by Aurele Lavigne » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:27 pm

Bob, many thanks to you again, as well as others who have replied to my
querries. Here's a summary on the points raised:

Muffler: I do plan to buy most parts from Terry and he also feels the fit
should be close(small mods may be req`d and welding is not a problem)
Pitch: I will play with this and try to get them all even
Strobes: Once again you`re an invaluable source of information(Can't wait to
buy you one!!!(I will make an effort to attend a meeting in the spring)
Oil temp: the conscensous seems to be that my coolant should be diluted more
to 50/50 and I'll try this next summer( I do think the oil temp should
improve)

Bye for now, Aurele
