I mentioned this once earlier that my elevator is in poor shape. I completed
the structure and started with the skin. I built the ribs/EL307 doublers
according to the manual as far as the ribs are on top of the doublers with the
flange direction according to the manual. This causes the skin to get pushed
foward the thickness of the doublers. This isn't apparent until you have already
drilled one side and start to do the other. I noticed a bulge of extra skin on
the second side but figured it was just sprung and started at the spar working
down the rib drilling holes. Well after 4 sets of holes it was apparent
something was wrong but I figured with 3/4 of the holes drilled you can only get so
pregnant so I continued. So now the question I have for you. I have all the
ribs drilled to #40 and since I pushed extra skin to the point of the EL ribs it
will probably create a slight bulge between the last rivit and the square
bend on the skin. There is also a pretty good gap 1/4 or so in the front, or
rounded side of the skin by the spar. I had it entirely cleco'd at one point and
took all the cleco's out and only cleco'd the ribs that wern't moved by
doublers and only in the factory pre-punched holes. If I leave both sides like that
one side would probably clean up with the #30 holes where the other side you
can barely see an overlap in the #40 holes. I talked to murphy and they
suggested going to a larger than normal rivit and trying to equal out the error of the
sides. What would you guys do? I guess I can tear the ribs/spar apart and
order new ribs and start over since the skin is still all #40 holes. I can try
and cheat the error and get as close as I can drilling the next size
up.......... but I don't know how to move the holes say.....015 in one direction. Since
murphy admitts this is a problem with the manual should they replace the
fubar'd ribs?

I know this doesn't help you now Brad, but if you end up replacing the ribs
here's what I did. Pick either the ribs that are directly attached to the
spar, or those sitting on the doublers... and only cleco the skin to those
ribs. Now drill your second row of holes into the ribs clecoing as you go,
now you will have a cleco in every rib without twisting the skin or spar/rib
assembly trying to line up holes that don't like up. After you drilled all
the other holes in your ribs and spar, go back and drill those holes that
you left empty in the beginning to #30. This cleans up the slight offset,
and you've still got everything nice and straight.
