Empty weight for 1800 amphibs

Post by Bob Patterson » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:00 am

Hi Bruce !

Probably pretty typical - I've personally never seen an
Elite that weighed under 1,100 lb. ....

Still loving my Rebel !

typical?

We are just ready to bring the front end loader into the hanger and push
the
floats under the Rebel, just kidding but we are using the loader to lift
the
plane. These are a set of MAM's earliest amphib kits and were built by Carm
Titus and used by him for about three years, they weigh 301#s.Yesterday I
completed the new 3.5"dia.x7"high cylindrical aluminum oil tank and it's
mounting pedestal which is affixed to the rear of the pump pedestal
between
the seats, also determined to mount the selector switch and pressure gauge
under the dash on the extreme left side.Perhaps we will do pictures to
post.
In case anyone is interested Clamar floats offer a Parker pump/selector
valve assy. which is quite small, maybe 3"square and 5high with a socket
for
a detachable handle,it is really neat and would consolidate the two
functions, it is also a lot of money.

I have faired bungee gear,12-9044 loops with MAM wheels 8:50x6 McCreary's
and a Scott 3200,steel spring. When we weigh all of this stuff I will
report.

A local scale company is available with certified digital platform scales
of
varying capacities which they deliver and operate and provide a federally
certified endorsed print out of the weight.
Another local aerial spray company has really cool and very expensive low
profile inter-connected digital platform scales to do their M-18 Dromaders
but they are more expensive to obtain the use of.

Hi Bruce !

As far as I know, the Murphy brochure WAS based on a standard-gear
Rebel, so you're right - a smaller weight increase ! Although, the
spring gear Rebel would be likely about 20 lb. heavier to start with,
than a standard gear, because of all those doubler/trippler/octupler (!)
plates ... ;-) :-)

Just curious - how much do just the gear legs alone weigh ??
Axles, wheels, & tires would be the same on both gears, so the legs
would be the only difference. Anybody know what just the standard
gear legs weigh ?? I bet there's not a lot of difference, if you
count in the center tubes & the bungees (or die springs) ....
suspect most of the weight increase is in the fuse beef-ups.

I <LOVE> Warren's answer !!! :-) Get a good accountant
(maybe ex-Enron ??) to find you a set of scales that give you
the answer you want !! ;-) :-) :-)

Is that a net 253 LB. Increase for a standard gear Rebel? Because if
it
is,
that would mean a spring gear Rebel should have a smaller net increase
as
he is
removing gear that weighs more than the stock gear and then adding
back
the
same in floats.

Empty weight for 1800 amphibs

Post by Angus McKenzie » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:00 am

Hi Bob
301#s includes everything on the exterior of the aircraft including mounting
bolts and hydraulic oil line residue as they were removed from Carms
Rebel. My only interior components are : pump,tank,gauge/valve with their
mounts and interior tubing-all not yet weighed.

At Curtis Martins suggestion I relocated the tank at the pump to eliminate
interior tubing and associated mess. This created some extra work because I
had made and clecoed in a snazzy mount back in the left side fus for the
plastic MAM tank and had run grometted 3/8 stainless tubing under floor
through the bulkheads back to front............Angus

Empty weight for 1800 amphibs

Post by Bob Fisher » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:00 am

hi angus i weighed my floats today

all the rigging came in at 41 lbs the pump, tank and valve at 7lbs with
the tank 3/4 full
the floats came in at 122 lbs each
so; 244 + 41+ 7 = 292 plus say 4 lbs more for hyd fluid 296 lbs
as per these notes bungee gear should be about 66 lbs plus /minus
looks like 230 lbs net increase will be close to the number for me. my
floats are assembled with solid rivets they may be a bit lighter i
don`t know?

my bird weighs 974 according to the weight and balance so the end result
should be 1204. ( or ----1189 depending on the accountant!) 530 lbs
net payload

I'm not sure a detachable handle is a good thing. When I want to put my
gear down I want the handle to be where it was when I put the gear up.
