Sourcing Aluminum Sheet

Post by David Ricker » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:26 pm

Hi Bob

Thanks, I'll check them out. I think you are right about Murphy, they would
have to tack on for their overheads & profits so the price would be higher.

Best I have found so far is a distributer that wanted about $55 for a sheet
but was reluctant to sell just a single sheet. He sells to people like
Murphy
and sells hundreds of sheets at a time.

Any more suggestions out there in case Leavens doesn't pan out??

Thanks

Dave R.

Hint: you can save shipping costs by having them cut it to a more
convenient size for your use ... Same goes for wing stringers that you
are going to use as stiffeners - much cheaper to ship in 4 foot or 6 foot
lengths.

I am looking to source it in Canada since the brokerage fees (via UPS
etc.) to get it across the border are about 50% of the value of the
material being shipped so if I can find it up here I save a bundle.

Thanks

Brian

Do you have contact info for Grass Roots aviation? I didn't turn up
anything
in a web search.

On Leavens, I spoke to them once on another item and decided it was less
costly
to buy from the states and pay the duty, tax, shipping & brokerage. Don't
know
yet if this is the case for aluminum but I'll check this (and Grass Roots)
ASAP. Gets my goat though to see how much we pay for USA produced things up
here in this day & age of "free trade".

Thanks

minimum order quantity - unlike Leavens - they are more expensive and do
not stock much in the way of metal that I am aware of. Leavens do have
great stock of anything in GA but you do pay. It is actually cheaper to
go
to somebody like Aerospares, have them order it from Leavens, and you get
it cheaper - personal service too.

Grass Roots are great though. They ship it next day. I had one problem
once where he shipped a 12"x12"x0.040" plate 1/4" too small. No questions
asked, he shipped the proper size the next day and let me keep the
original
piece.

Sourcing Aluminum Sheet

Grass Roots, 948 Adelaide Ave. West, Oshawa,Ont. 905-434-4651
Dave takes evening and weekend calls and visits and will ship in any
quantity as
mentioned. Phone before visiting. Several people including Aerospares and
Metal
Supermarkets buy from Dave.

Leavens does not deal in 6061.

Ideal Metals sells single sheets (and part sheets if he has leftover offcuts
in
inventory) at the cash sales desk. VISA is considered cash here. Phone first
as
it can take an hour to get your order filled. Don't know if he will ship
single
sheets but his prices are dramatically lower than anywhere else. $40.
minimum.
Priced by the pound. Example 4' x 8' .040 6061T6 18lbs $68. That's from a
year
ago December. Brampton, Ont. 905-456-3350 As per normal you probably don't
want
to mention the airplane word.

SOURCING ALUMINUM SHEET

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:27 pm

Hello all,

Went thru archives and noticed people questioning where to get aluminum sheet. Ideal Metals in Brampton, Ontario is definitely the right place!(Heck Bob lives so close he could probably walk over and get it for you! (Just kidding Bob)) 4 X 12 sheet of 20thou is around $65cdn. Was mentioned that aircraft should probably not be mentioned. Nothing could be further from the truth. I buy all my sheet from Ideal and they deliver to my door in Penetanguishene at no extra cost! (I usually buy about $1500 at a time though.) They also deliver to Zenair and Custom Flight Components(The Northstar) on their same weekly trip to this neck of the woods, so they definitely don't have aircraphobia!!! They also supply material certifications for each sheet of aluminum in the order. I once bought a 4 x 6 piece of .125 2024 T3 to build skis from Leavens for $621 only to find out they buy Theirs from Ideal and a full 4 X 12 sheet from Ideal was only $585. Needless to say, I have bought from Ideal ever since.

Just my 2 cents!

Wayne

SOURCING ALUMINUM SHEET

Post by David Ricker » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:27 pm

Hi Wayne
Your info is interesting.
I contacted the "local" Ideal people and they drew a big blank, Halifax, Saint John and Toronto. They claim they don't carry it, frustrates the devil out of me because obviously they do but if you don't talk to the right person who is in the know you get nowhere (and the contact in Brampton is ????). The other big problem is when you find someone who does carry it at the price range you mentioned they won't sell it to an individual (ASL in Toronto) or want 3x the material cost to ship it because they build a pallet/plywood case to ship it flat. The local Metal Supermarket couldn't get satisfaction out of Ideal either.
Wayne, as a member of the Rebel comunity, is it worth your while to look at offering some of the more easily shipped materials to us "remote" (now there is a chuckle, since we are on one of the main east coast shipping routes to Europe.....) builders? I suspect putting the 4 x 12 x .020 type of material in a 12" sonotube would get it to the buyer in one piece since we were able to carry it from MAM to Halifax by Air Canada without damage.
Thanks for your .02 Wayne!

Dave,

You must be calling Ideal Supply(electrical supply company) if they say they don't sell aluminum sheet!

Ideal Metals and Alloys Canada Inc. , 268 Orenda Road, Brampton, Ontario. L6T-4A9
1-800-567-3003, 1-905-456-3350/fax-2583 Cash Sales rep: Bob H.S. Grewall: Extension #357
My shipment always comes on a wood platform at no extra cost, but they may roll who knows!

Give them a call and see what they can do for your needs!

As for me selling sheet to the Rebel builders etc., my business has already grown much further than the "hobby justification" I originally planned!!. I just recently purchased over 35 tons of NOS hardware and spent 3 months this summer moving, sorting and shelving it!(when I could have been building and repairing) I still haven't got it inventoried so I can start selling it! If you ever wanted(but don't ask yet I haven't got them priced) a nut plate, I have over 75,000 of them now! C/Sunk, One Lug, Corner, Right Angle, Nyltrol, Steel, Aluminum and High Temp. etc.(where were they when I was building my plane?) or maybe you need a 2" adel clamp(I have over 9000 of this size alone!). This stuff will be easy to sell VISA and ship in a small box parcel post once its inventoried!(and my wife knows were it is on the shelf!). I don't want to start rolling up sheet etc. and would prefer to let those that already do it, continue to do so. (Dave Drain 1-905-434-4651, etc.) Sorry!
