G'day from Australia.

I just wanted to introduce myself to the group as I have been lurking
for some time now.

I have purchased a Rebel kit #659 and expect it to be shipped out of the
factory about the end of August. I have been hard at work constructing
the work table and spending evenings reading through the construction
manual.

As you may know Australia is a huge country, and there are very few
Rebel builders here to talk to. I can just see now that I will have
dozens of questions and I hope I can call on the group for help and
guidance.

I will power my Rebel with a Rotax 912 and would be pleased if someone
could provide me with some performance figures for a Rebel fitted with
the 80hp engine & or the 100hp engine.

Welcome to the group, Ian !!

You rang the right number !! I'm about the biggest booster of Rebels
with 912's in the world !!! :-)

My wife & I have #001 (we bought our Rebel before the factory had even
BUILT the prototype !!). It has about 950 hr. on the Rotax 912, now, and
I'm VERY pleased with this MODERN aircraft engine, with MODERN engineering
and metallurgy !! Other than oil & filter changes every 50 hr., and 2
new air filters, the TOTAL maintenance has been 4 sets of spark plugs !!!

Performance is CONSIDERABLY better than our last aircraft - an 85 Hp.
Aeronca Super Chief ! We cruise about 97 mph, on 3 gallons/hr. of Shell
Gold (premium auto fuel), and the oil goes down about 1/8" in 50 hr..
Takeoff distance is under 200 ft., and climb is about 1,100 fpm, solo,
and about 400 fpm at (ahem) JUST max. gross ;-) Our typical camping load
is a 10 x 10 tent, 2 sleeping bags, 2 self-inflating mattresses, 2
suitcases,
2 smaller (3 night) suitcases/packs, a shoe bag, a tool bag, the aircraft
logs & spare parts, (in a nylon briefcase), a couple of bottles of water,
an insulated bag of food (about 14 meals), 2 warmer jackets, a vest, 2
cameras, some extra film, a couple of sweaters & solar blankets, an extra
gas can with about 25 litres of the fuel (our 'long-range tank' ;-) ),
a tarp for a groundsheet for the tent, aileron locks & windshield &
propellor
covers, and a couple of folding aluminum lawn chairs !! That's about what we
took to Oshkosh ....

This Rebel was used for the testing of the Murphy 1500 straight floats,
and performance was impressive, compared to the Chief. Solo, Robin got
off the water in about 6 seconds, and, even with 2 of us, and half tanks,
it only took about 34 seconds !!

If the Rotax 912-S, with 100 Hp., turns out to be as good an engine as
our 912, it should be an IDEAL choice !! I have another Rebel, #068, on
Murphy 1500 Amphibs, with a Lycoming O-235-C2C, of (cough) 108 Hp.. The
performance is barely adequate, although I did fly it across Canada in 1996.
I am seriously considering removing the Lycosaurus and replacing it with
a 912-S. I estimate I can lose about 200 Lb., as I now have a metal prop,
standard starter & alternator, and a large battery !! Old rule of thumb
says that 200 Lb. is about equal to 20 Hp., so I should be BETTER off with
the 912-S.... (100 + extra 20 = 120 Hp. :-)
If I do the conversion, I will put it back on Amphibs, just to see !!! :-)

Oh - the maintenance on the Lycoming ? Well, in about 1,100 Hr., it
has had: a top overhaul, a new mag, a new carb., a new exhaust system,
and 2 new cylinders, just to cover the BIG things. It burns about 5 1/2
gallons/hour, and a liter of oil every six hours or so !! Takeoff distance
is slightly longer than the 912-powered Rebel, and cruise is about
3 mph slower, on wheels... but it DOES climb better, when fully loaded,
on a hot day.

There are several Rebels here with 912's, and all are very happy, as
far as I know. We have flown over most of North America with ours, from
Quebec to British Columbia (several times), and down to Florida.

I'm assuming you have ordered the standard, amateur-built Rebel, with
1,650 gross, and NOT the "ultra-light" model, which is missing several key
parts.... (like the back floor). Going with the standard Rebel will leave
you with the option of using other engines later, if you want to, and will
help resale value, too. The Murphy cowling setup for the 912 is excellent,
and can be made easier to work on with just a few little mods .....


I'm sure you will be very pleased with your Rebel !

I did consider the 100hp Jabiru, but in my opinion it is still in the
experimental stage with only a few in service and therefore there is not
much
of a servicve history. Local "experts" say that it will make up to 120hp but
as
it is a direct drive engine the revs are a bit high for best propellor
performance. The cost is about the same as the proven Rotax. However the
Jabiru
is lots lighter without the complexities of water cooling (etc).
Perhaps what I am really saying is that if I have an experimental 'plane I
don't want an experimental engine also.

Sure hope you're feeling better. Looked like the fun really got
taken
out of OSH for you. First time I've ever seen you when you're side of the
conversation was only one sentence! Really though, glad the heat didn't
effect your ride home. I'll try to make the Sept. meeting with Dave, but I
haven't had a chance to even talk to him but once since OSH.
Nice to see a new bunch of names on the site, I guess someone should
let them know that the archives are a great resource, but it's also fun for
