I have the gold 6.00x6 wheels installed and hate to toss them since the
machine
will be going on floats after a year or two. I know the matco brakes are
weak
but I think I can live with that. Am I fooling myself?

Is there any longevity problem with the Matco units or anything in
particular to
watch for? The brake discs on these wheels bolt to 3 tabs that are welded to
the
rims .

The 1650# gear upgrade has been done so the axles are 7/8".

Hi Bill,

There was a session on this in this forum not so long ago, it should be in
the archives.

It simply involves making a new bracket to mount the bottom of the brake
cylinders on the floor in front of the rudder pedal mounting. As the rudder
pedal is moved forward and backward the brake cylinder should remain
parrallel to it.

This ensures the brake pedal remains at a constant angle at any rudder
delection. ( Great for stopping ground loops!!!)

It is a very good mod.

Cheers

Alister

As I recall, the GOLD Matcos were only rated for 600 Lb. load (!!!).
There have been a few cases of the rims splitting on heavier Rebels.

As for the effectiveness of the small Matco brakes - it's mostly wishful
thinking. They would NOT hold a Subaru - powered Rebel with much more than
idle power. There is virtually NO effectiveness in trying to turn sharply
- there wouldn't be enough braking force to pop out the kick-out tailwheel !
Slowing down after landing ... well, there's more drag from leaving the
flaps down than from the brakes !

The Gold Matco's were only marginally suitable for Renegades,
Mavericks,
and ultra-light Rebels....

You probably should talk to Angus McKenzie at the next builders meeting
- he just replaced his Silver Matcos after less than 50 hours flying. I
think the disk retainers cracked ... but he can give you the full story.
One consideration might be the difficulty he encountered in converting
to the Murphy wheels after-the-fact....

It might be worth a phone call to Colleen at Murphy regarding a trade-in
on the Matcos - I'm sure they don't want anybody damaging their new Rebel.
