I know you are in the plastic injection moulding buisness so what would be
your comments on plastic skiis. When snowmobiles first came out they had wood
skiis, then metal, then metal with plastic bottom but they are all plastic
now. Being a sledder I know plastic skiis give better shock absortion, don't
stick or freeze to the snow and are lighter. How about making up a mold?

Ray, the problem lies in the need, depending on the material to be shot, for
3 to 5 tons clamping pressure/square inch of product surface to keep the
mould shut during injection. This would play out for a 60" x 16" ski to
needing a minimum of a 2900 Ton clamp machine with a HUGE injection barrel
to shoot it in Polypropylene, up to a 4800 ton clamp machine for some of the
mineral reinforced materials. We specialize in small highly detailed parts
and have 27 machines ranging from 22 tons clamp to (against my better
judgement) a 400 ton machine. The 400 ton machine is 32 feet long, 6 feet
wide x 8 feet high (cost $345,000) and only has plattens large enough to
clamp a 32" x 32" tool base. Give some thought to the size of the machine
required to hold a tool that's about 6' long x 30" wide to make one ski at a
time. The machines are out there, that I know, but they make a Semi truck
and trailer look small !!!
The tooling base alone would run in the neighbourhood of $40,000 plus all
the tool shop time to make it into a mould. I would hesitate to guess final
mould price would hit $125,000 for a single cavity.
