Bob,

Thanks, that was the information I was looking for. Do
you have a contact point for Angus McKenzie. I have
Dave Fifes info.

On another note, I was talking on the phone last night
with a flight instructor that recently sold his Rebel.
He had a Subaru conversion in it and said he would go
with a Lycoming if he ever did it again. I was asking
about pros and con of the plane and he strongly
recommended doing the split flap option on the plane.
Since you have flown several Rebels what is your
opinion on this?

I am a fairly low time pilot 250hrs., all in my 172. I
have Zero tailwheel time. I am currently looking for a
tailwheel aircraft that I can trade for. What type of
plane out there flys similar to the Rebel? Can't
afford a Suber Cub.
I spoke to a guy with a c-90 Champ he has for sale. I
will be looking at it in a couple of weeks.

Thanks,
Keith

Bob Patterson

Thanks Bob-more questions!

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:54 pm

Hi Keith !

You can reach Angus at:

"Angus McKenzie - McKenzie/STOL" <angus@lweb.net>

Thought I knew most of the Subaru conversions ... Which
Subaru did he have, the 2.2 L or the EA-81 ?? The 2.5 L with
a Marcotte drive would be a good combo, but you are definitely
looking at a lot of extra build time, just sourcing parts &
mounting them.

As for the split flaps - ABSOLUTELY NOT !!! You get
half the flap, half the aileron, and lose the advantage of
negative flapperon !!! I've flown them, and know several
who tried them and promptly switched back ...
Sorry to be so wishy-washy, but this is one "improvement"
I really don't like ! ;-) :-)
Just MHO, of course ....

You should have no problem adjusting after 250 Hr. !
There's nothing out there that's as easy to fly and land as
a Rebel, but a Fleet Canuck, Piper J-4, or similar would be
a good comparison. The Champ is a good machine - needs a lot
more rudder work than a Rebel, but a good trainer. Watch the
older Champs - there's an AD on the wooden wing spars calling
for ANNUAL inspections. Personally, I wouldn't touch one that
didn't have the metal spar upgrade, unless it was DIRT cheap -
they won't hold their resale value ! Maybe you could trade
for a C-170 ?? I know one fellow who converted his early C-172
to a taildragger - worked well !! (Probably a bit trickier
than a Champ, though.)

I flew quite a bit in Champs, back in the '50's, and
shared a Piper J-4 for over 10 years .... had a Super Chief for
several years in the Eighties. The Chief can be a surprise -
it's MUCH harder to land than the Champ ! Same wings, but the
fat fuse for side-by-side makes for a lot more rudder work,
and a stronger tendency to ground-loop. A Taylorcraft would
be easier, but you can't see a lot out of them, and they're
pretty cramped. There's a Citabria 7-GCBC, 150 hp., half-time,
nearby, going for $49,000 CDN. It has the metal spar, and
that sounds like a good price - of course, you get about a
40% discount for using US dollars ! ;-)

If you can get a good instructor, and fly from a grass
field for the first few hours, you will pick it up quickly,
then you can move to pavement and cross-winds easily.

Good luck !
