Elite Nose wheel

Post by bob.hyatt » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:58 pm

Does anyone have pics of the elite nosewheel? Any opinions of its design and
suitability for use on grass/rough(ish) ground would be appreciated.

Regards,

Bob

Elite Nose wheel

Post by Ralph Baker » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:58 pm

Hello Bob,
We are building a taildragger Elite. When I saw my first training wheel
Elite at Sun&Fun 6 years ago it had a crack in the nosegear at the lower
end. I don't remember if it was in the wheel fork or leg but the gear did
not look rugged enough to me. I realize that how it looks does not always
play in a stress analysis but it made my mind up. MAM may well have done a
modification but I have not seen a later nosewheel Elite. One consideration
is the limitation of tire size. If you are on rough ground the larger tires
"climb" out of holes and over bumps better and can run lower pressures for
more cushioning.
Regards,
Ralph Baker

Elite Nose wheel

Post by bob.hyatt » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:59 pm

Hello Ralph,

Thanks for the reply, I must admit the nose gear does not look to
substantial but, I have only been able to see it from the pics on the murphy
site. I hate to confess but my reason for looking at it has more to do with
my flying experience than anything else. I operate out of a smallish grass
strip which to be fair is not that rough I suppose. I also have a streak
shadow that I fly from there and the nosewheel on the shadow is anything but
substantial and it seems to handle it alright.

Finding a crack on the demo a/c is not particularly confidence building
material.

Thanks,

Bob

By copy to anyonelse I would appreciate any closeup pics of the nosegear if
available.

I have the tricycle kit, and am not planning to use the parts, so if you
want to go trike, we should talk. Can also supply photos of parts.

Alan Hepburn

elite nose wheel

Post by Alan Hepburn » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:29 pm

Well, my intent is to put it on amphibious floats, so the whell gear will be
of primary interest to any possible future owners. It seems to me that most
operators of this type of aircraft are going to be interested in bush type
operations, for which the taidragger is more suitable. So I decided to
build it as a taildragger. Initially, the plan was to put it on wheels
until I had flown the bugs out, but now I am considering putting it straight
onto amphibs. I would have to buy the tailwheel and new main gear legs, and
put in a few hours to assemble the whole thing, so why go to the effort and
expense?

The taildragger is somewhat lighter than the trike, as it doesn't have the
two extra 2 x 2 tubes to support the main gear and the nose gear strut, plus
a few other bits and pieces. One desirable mod that comes with the trike
which looks a good idea for either configuration is thicker corner wraps on
the nose. The standard corner wraps tend to oil can a bit when you shake
the airplane up and down by the tail. This says to me they're a bit too
light.

Photos of major parts to follow via mail direct to you.

Regards, Al.

Just a note to let everybody know that I disabled the ability for accounts on
the dcsol.com system to send and receive internet e-mail some time ago. There
was just to much spam sitting on the server since most list members with their
own accounts never bothered to check. These accounts can now only be used to
access the archives and post messages to the list.
