Just a thought, but at $39.99 a day, one of the big U-haul trucks might be a
good option since you trailer is so small. I would imagine you could get
everything in one trip... and they have the nice rails all along the sides
for tieing to.

What do you think? One at a time with 4 inches of foam underneath? Has
anyone done this in a more creative (cheap) manner? How would you keep
from bending the trailing edge skin?

I moved my Rebel wings by building a couple of "L"-shaped frames out of
2x4s to hold them vertically. The horizontal legs had curved cutouts
for the wing leading edges, liberally padded with foam rubber pads and
carpet strips. The cutouts were spaced far enough apart that 2x4 or 4x4
spacers padded with carpet strips could be placed between the wings to
protect from the strut fittings. You may tie the wing mount fittings
directly to your trailer in front for a hold down, but your wings will
protrude 4' beyond the end of your trailer, so you will need a red flag.
You will probably complete your "L"s into "0"s for security tiedowns,
clearing the thin trailing edges.

When moving the fuselage before installing the wheels, I found a light
boat trailer to be ideal...the tail rests against the rubber bow
bushing, and the cabin rests on a 3/4" plywood fastened to the boat
rails. Very easy to tie down... The wings can be carried on either
side of the fuselage tail cone on 2x4s cut per above.

Paul, I think the original pic was of the tail feathers folded up. The MAM site always talked about wing removal, not folding. I've seen a couple other pics in the archives for moving, but they were for long moves, not just across town.
I guess I'd look at just putting the tailwheel in the bed of a Pickup or similar and making a nice slow trip down the backroads at a quiet time of day. As far as the wings are concerned, my thought would be to make a bracket for the trailer with 2 carpet slings about 16" wide and carry the wings leading edge down. Spread the load and go slow. Between moving parts and weighing the airplane for the first time I've heard horror stories of alot of work being bent because of being in a hurry. The 4" foam and 2 trips doesn't sound to bad either for the wings, just make sure the straps don't allow any bounce. I've also seen the damage done to the MAM stuff in the back of a enclosed trailer on the way to OSH. Of course I'm looking at this from a Michigan road aspect. Our roads suck!!

Hi.

I moved my wings and towed my plane to the paint shop and back.The wings
are ina cradle which I put on a 14" lonf flatbed,tied down and all went
well.The fuse, I put the tailwheel in the back of an S 15 pick-up, tied it
down, put a bolt through the tailwheel axle and tied it down as well.
Drove about 40 KM/HR. and all went really well. Was about 3 miles to the
shop.Evan past 2 cops with no problem.

Paul,

I just recently moved #687R to the airport. I rented a large equipment
trailer. Made three trips-for the fuselage, then each wing. I Used several
lawn chair pads stacked under each end of the wing and lightly tied it down.
Drove slow. I only had about 5 miles to go. It worked well. I recently posted
several photos of the move in the archives under R-Fuselage and R-Wing, if you
are interested.

When I first took my Christavia to the airstrip, I towed the fuselage backwards with the tailwheel locked into a
wood, 2x4 triangle fixed to the tailgate of my truck. About 25 miles. I did the trip about 10 am on a quiet Tuesday
morning and ran into one cop along the way at a red light. He asked where I was headed and told me to be
careful. Nice guy. I brought the wings later in the truck bed, stacked one on top of the other on some foam pads.
Use some common sense with road use and the local minions will likely turn a blind eye and wish you good luck.
I've used a 20 foot box type rented truck too on occasions. Common sense will prevail. Don't sweat it.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Looks like I'll take it 'low &
slow', quite fitting for a Rebel, eh? I think I'll go with the wings on
end with the nose down in the cradle they are store in right now. Maybe
brace it up a but with a few 2 X 4's and more padding. The tailwheel on
the pickup might work too.
