metric aviation bolts

Post by Tim Saxton » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:28 pm

Can anyone recommend a good source for metric aviation bolts?

I'm not satisfied with a 1/2" hole I drilled and am considering going to 13mm (= 0.512").

It seems that the only way to accurate drill large holes through thick material is with a drill press. It's too easy to elongate a hole using a hand drill, even when I use a reamer to final size. Or maybe it's just me :-)

Thanks,
Tim Saxton

As we are an importer of Eastern block aircraft we often need to find metric
aircraft hardware.
We regularly buy metric aircraft hardware from "Metric Screw & Tool
Company" in Wakefield, Mass Their web site is metricscrew-tool.com and their
phone is 1-800-metric1
A second source of even more unusual metric hardware (including some
Russian aircraft standards) is Metric & Multistandard Components Corp.
1-800-431-2792. They have a catalog of standards that is often invaluable
when using metric hardware.

Tim, generally any good Metric hardware >from a name brand supply house< is
Grade 5 equivalent. AN bolts are essentially grade 5 - 125,000 psi shear
strength. Just make sure you are really buying 125,000psi Metric hardware
and you'll be fine, if you feel the need to do so.
