Murphy versus Cessna

Post by Mike Kimball » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:28 pm

I just helped a friend load parts from a Cessna 172 involved in a bad crash
onto his flatbed to be hauled to Seattle where he is moving soon. I thought
I'd share a couple of observations. When picking up the upholstered doors
they were noticeably lighter than the stock un-upholstered doors on my Super
Rebel. Then I bent down to pick up a lift strut and nearly threw it up in
the air it was so light. So I looked inside and there was no thick square
tube inside the streamlined extrusion. And the extrusion was thinner. And
the fittings on the ends were pitiful! The SR strut has got to be 3 or 4
times stronger. I really started paying attention when I handed up all the
other parts. I'm not sure I want to fly in a 172 again. Less ribs, lighter
material, seemingly weaker in every respect. I laughed out loud when I saw
the shattered windshield that was like paper fluttering in the wind and I
thought of the 1/4 inch windshield going into my SR. And yet the finished
product doesn't weigh any less than a comparable Murphy product. I wonder
how that happens? I did notice that the seats were much heavier than mine.
That must be it. :-)

P.S. How did it crash? His young son decided to reach down and shut the
fuel off at low altitude while he wasn't looking.
