JUST A WORD
The Rebel UL is rated at 1450 lbs in the USA. Mine is powered by a
Continental IO 240 B4B rated at 125 HP using a Sensenich 72 dia by 56 pitch
propeller. The airframe has the lite lift struts, fabric control surfaces and
a solid rear spar. I fly it at 1450 gross on land and Murphy says I can go to
1525 lbs on floats. Typical solo weight with half fuel is 1125 lbs.

Maybe the UL model sold to the USA is a different animal all together than
our Canadian one, seeing yours has a solid rear spar! Does it have a .063

After a number of trips to the Murphy factory which is about 150 miles north
of my home, I ordered the Advanced UL Rebel in early 1996 to keep the
airframe as lite as possible as I had a OSMOH A-65 Continental for power. I
finished the plane in May of 1999 using the A-65. (Empty wt. 686 lbs.) During
the start up I found lots of problems with the engine and lost all confidence
in it. I repowered with the IO240 with Murphy Air help and they have been
informed of the changes throughout the project.
In closing, last July during the Arlington Air show Darl Murphy came over to
my hanger and we had a long talk about my plane. I feel very comfortable with
the 1450 lb. gross weight that we are flying at.

Steve, that clears a lot up! I guess as long as Darryl is secure with that
weight, then you should be too! What threw me off is you say yours has solid
rear spars. BOTH AULA kits I have bought (385ul and 386ul) have rear spars
that are full of lightening holes. 3 per each rib "bay" all the way across,
except the very end bays. I don't know if Aurele's has these holes or not so
he will have to decide on a safe weight to fly at if he is going to exceed
the AULA 1212lb max gross specified by Transport Canada.

John, as far as I know you can put whatever floats you want, but I would
certainly recommend staying away from amphips. Not only will be pushing the
legal weight limits, you should keep the U/L as light as possible, you'll
need all the power you have to perform on floats. As for the 912S, it sure
is legal and is the same weight as the 912 and if I had the chance I'd swap
my 912 for a 912S tomorrow. As for the differences between Rebels, I'll let
someone else reply such as Bob P. or others. One main difference about the
U/L model is that your gross weight will be capped at the legal limit of
just over 1200 lbs now. From my experience on floats, you wouldn't want to
be any heavier behind a 912. Just my opinion.

Wayne, of course you're right. I was planning to contact Murphy to find out
if they would file the necessary forms to meet the new limit. As it stands,
the limit is 1050 plus 10 % for floats. Regarding the 912S, you might be
right regarding the extra 20 h.p. not being rated on the Rebel, which would
be a surprise to me since they are the same weight and all, but once again,
if the documentation submitted by Murphy never included it, it may not be
approved.
Do you know if Darryl intended on filing for the new weight limits?

Last time I asked Darryl M. he didn't think the new weight limit was
available yet from TC and didn't think he had to do anything about it. Since
then I have been told that Transport Canada sent every AULA manufacturer the
necessary forms/documents required to submit for "upgrossing" the AULA to
1232lb, although I have no idea if Darryl has done so and may be hesitant to
include those already in the field that are flying (and that he has/had no
control over maintenance etc to date). Don't see it as a substantial issue
though since the design is definitely capable of this new weight.
Original AULA Category is 1058lbs and you can add 154lbs for floats for a
total of 1212lbs when operated on floats. The new limit that is coming out
is going to be 1232lbs AND YOU CAN NOT ADD ANY ADDITIONAL WEIGHT FOR
FLOATS!!! so doesn't make a whole lot of difference if you bother with the
new limit if you are on floats!!!!.
