Has anyone opted to incorporate gap seals on any of their control/flap
surfaces? I looked in the archive and find no references but it is a fairly
common upgrade (at least from an internet search perspective) to certified
aircraft and everyone (vendors) seems to quote 4-5 mph increase in cruise,
~~4 mph reduction in stall and ~~ 150 fpm increase in climb.

Are the Murphy control surfaces by design immune to the air flow
communication between the low pressure and high pressure sides of the wing
at the control surface gap?

Mostly I am just working on the Elevator and am going to try to figure how
to gap seal the trim tab at this point.

Would a gap seal on the rudder increase its effectiveness and help with the
same thing the tip plates are striving for?

Guess you are going to be the leader here and will have to let us all know
how it works out, unless someone flying finds some time to stop having "fun"
and tries some experiments before you get in the air.

Hi Britt, with the way the skins overlap the aft channel spar on the fin and
stab it seems they have built in gap seals. The rounded leading edge of the
rudder and elevator fit up into the channel and sort of seal the gap.
Ailerons and flaps are the same but only on the top. To me it doesn't seem
like it would be worth the effort on those. Maybe the big gap on the bottom
of the huge trim tabs could use a seal.

I know every little bit helps, but for me speed is not really an issue.
With the radial engine and amphib floats I'll probably be lucky to not get
passed by a J-3, unless I want to burn a zillion gallons an hour.

As far as the rudder and the tip fins or strakes it's not the effectiveness
of the rudder but the total amount of vertical surface area.

Float guys, how about a strake or fin on the top rear of the float?? At the
very least it would look dorky and you can trip over it.
