Dual Redundant Ignition Was: Re: V8 Ignition

Post by Mike Kimball » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:02 pm

Thanks Dave. It's expensive, but I really like the Quickcar MSD dual
ignition setup. I wonder how I integrate a backup battery into the system?
Of course batteries rarely fail all at once. I should notice battery
problems long before catastrophic failure. Would be nice to have a small
motorcycle battery just to run the ignition system in case something does go
wrong with the primary battery though.

Guys

This issue has to have been worked out & available commercially, every
NASCAR
Winston Cup race car has redundant ingnition systems, you hear them say they
have
switched to the backup system and fixed a miss problem just by flipping a
switch
as they are driving. I would expect that by digging around in that market
(and
the professional sports car racing market) you would find a fully engineered
solution which comes in a box ready to install.

I would look at companies like MSD www.msdignition.com and Quickcar.
Quickcar has
an integration package for dual redundant installation with 2 coils & 2 MSD
boxes, http://www.quickcar.net/ign_sys/ign_sys.html. With the MSD systems
you
can even have an over-rev limiter if you are so inclined! I would expect to
find
something at Electromotive also.

Hope this helps

you switch to your backup ignition amp the spark then is routed from your
second coil as well. This at least keeps you from falling out of the sky
due to one transistor.

Jegs has the MSD distributor as well as the other parts. The switch and
harness I could not find this go round.....

Mike, an excellent reference book for electrical systems is "the Aero
Electric Connection" by Bob Nuckolls http://www.aeroelectric.com. He has a
number of different designs for redundant A/C systems.

Dual Redundant Ignition Was: Re: V8 Ignition

Post by David Ricker » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:02 pm

Hi Mike

Glad to help where I can. On this one, I follow racing of all sorts so I knew
we probably don't have to re-invent the wheel for the dual ignition even if it
is a bit pricey.

For the redundant battery, I think there may be some system RVs (the 4 wheeled
kind!) use. It lets you charge both batteries and draw on just one at a time.
The idea is to use the second battery for things like lights at night and not
drain the main (ignition) battery. A (big?) diode would allow charging but not
discharge to the main electrical system. .

In any case a little bit of switching may be required, perhaps a solenoid switch
to kick in the secondary batery when needed?

Cheers,

Dave

Dual Redundant Ignition Was: Re: V8 Ignition

Mike

We just received our latest Kit Planes and would you believe there is an article
about a Corvair ignition setup where they use two coils and a combiner with a
single distributor.

The combiner is made by MSD, you connect both coils to it and control which is
active by shutting off its' driving signal with a simple toggle switch
(basically, open the positive lead and it is along for the ride until it is
needed.). The combiner sounds like a couple of (seriously) heavy duty diodes
joined at their output ends to the distributor.
