SR Seats
If any SR builders have installed their seats, I would appreciate any tips
on locating the rails, compatability of the seat base with auto seats and
any problems you had to deal with in this area. Has anyone installed auto
seats? If so, your comments would be most helpful in planning which way to
go.

Hi Tom,
I've given the subject some thought. I've got my rails fitted to the floor,
but not riveted down, yet. What I've thought about doing, is building an
adapter that would allow the auto seat to be attached to the MAM roller
base. This way, you'd have the advantage of a comfy seat and utilize the
stock rails, which seem pretty good. The rails locate directly above the
flanges, below the floor boards, making them plenty strong. Even if you
wanted to use an auto seat base (say, with the electric traveler mechanism),
you'd still want to attach to the floor where the rails go. I figure just
stick with the rails.
A lot of years back, I put some Mustang II seats into a '67 VW Bug. It was
surprisingly easy to do, and made for a real comfortable car, or at least as
comfortable as a '67 Bug could be. I've been thinking about some real nice
sports car seats for the SR. Wouldn't it be sorta nice to have seats that
were actually comfortable? If I could find a wrecked 500SL.....

I stuck the seats on the rails then positioned them to match the floor
angles as indicated in the manual. I put the front of the rail just short
of the removable panel between the front door posts. (The removable panel
is actually not called for unless you are doing a Moose, but it seemed like
a good idea and was easy to do on my Super Rebel.) I cut off about 17
inches of the rail on the end where the holes don't go all the way to the
end to be used for my rear buckets. I left about a 6 or 7 inch gap between
the front and rear rails to make it easy to remove the seats. It was not
necessary to drill additional pin holes in the rear seat rails because the
pin is near the front seat mounts and the rear ones don't need holes. I did
find that the jig used to make the Murphy seat bottoms is not perfect so the
pilot seat works best on the pilot side and the passenger one needs to go on
the passenger side. Mark your seat bottoms because they may not be
interchangeable from one set of rails to the other because of subtle
differences.
I was very impressed with the low weight and decent comfort of my seats with
the Murphy upholstery kits in place. I have been sitting on them a lot
while I cut windows and skylights, and while doing other work inside. Of
course, now they will permanently have bits of metal shavings and such that
the shop vac just doesn't quite get. Oh well.

We, too, had considered auto seats and purchased a set of seats for a
motorhome, and even though they are smaller than regular car seats, they are
of course way too heavy. We then lucked upon a very nice set of cessna 172
seat frames at the Parts Mart at Sun 'N Fun one year and are using those for
pilot/co-pilot seats.
As for the seat rails, they sit on the angle pieces on the carrythroughs -
position your murphy seats on the rails before you drill.

Forgot to add - we did have to modify the cessna seats at the base to
accommodate as we put the MAM supplied bucket seats in the rear instead of
the bench seat - we welded the brackets of the cessna seats that slide on
the rails to fit (fortunately did not need to be moved very much from their
original position).

the seat. The back frame is a large diameter steel tube, while the seat
pan is a formed steel tub. Now you could replace the back frame with
smaller diameter steel tube or wrap graphite around a PVC pipe. The
seat pan could also be replaced with graphite and the headrest can be
removed. Even if you just use the foam and coverings, that'd save a
lot of work building the seats.
The reason I looked at this seat was because it was available and the
seats (for me) are very confortable.
Now if I can find a set of Lexus seats...

smaller diameter steel tube or wrap graphite around a PVC pipe. The
seat pan could also be replaced with graphite and the headrest can be
removed. Even if you just use the foam and coverings, that'd save a
lot of work building the seats.
The reason I looked at this seat was because it was available and the
seats (for me) are very confortable.
Now if I can find a set of Lexus seats...
