We just finished riveting our first skin (one side) and I remember that
someone suggested something that was good for cleaning the skin but I
can't remember what that was. Any suggestions?

Jim,
There are a number of products which work with varying levels of
toxicity. MEK works fast and is toxic.
Acetone works fast and is less toxic (relatively) but not my first
choice. Both of these evaporate quickly and as a result you must move
fast to get dissolved materials off with a clean dry rag before
evaporation and redeposition.

My choice is a product called Citrasafe. This is a MIL and Boeing
approved citrus product and evaporates completely over a few hours.
This allows a reasonably paced cleanup. It is available from a company
in the Northwest and I can get you their contact info if you can't find
it on the net. They had a 6 gallon minimum which is just about what we
have used on our Elite with complete interior corrosion proofing. The
material is completely non toxic and biodegradable. It will, however,
stiffen vinyal gloves over time and pull ALL the oils out of your hands
without gloves. The major drawback is cost.

Another citrus option that I have used is Enviroklenz made by a company
called Amettra in Baldwinsville, NY. It does a good job as well but
comes witout the MIL / Boeing blessing and costs about half as much.

For primer cleanup on skins after riveting it has to be Acetone if still
soft or Epoxy thinner. Mek may work as well but I had a quantity of
epoxy thinner. All three are flammable and toxic. I used Invisible
gloves and latex gloves when these could not be avoided.

I use ACETONE to clean everything off immediately after riveting, to clean
up any of the spashed corrossion proofer around the rivet heads and drips
etc that somehow always end up on the skins. Do it now or you will have to
razor blade it off before paint, as the places it is are not prepped and
it's bound to lift later on you if you just paint over it.

Just for general cleaning & degreasing, most use acetone now -
nasty, but MUCH healthier than MEK !! :-)

It will clean off any surplus epoxy primer before it hardens.
Be careful to use a 'dampened' cloth .... if you flood the surface,
it could dissolve the epoxy down around the rivets.

Jim,
I used Poly-Fiber's METL-SOL, which does a good job of de-greasing and
removing ink from Sanford Sharpie pens. I got the METL-SOL from Wick's
Aircraft, but Aircraft Spruce also sells it. Be careful. METL-SOL contains
toluene and MEK, both of which are carcinogens and flammable. I use heavy
butyl gloves when I am handling paper towels soaked in METL-SOL. For
situations where I am not handling the METL-SOL so directly, I use latex
gloves over Nitrile gloves. Make sure your shop is well ventilated and
there are no open flames.
