I am trying to find out if you can use a certain port for oil pressure
takeoff. The Lycoming O-320-E2D usually has the oil pressure taken off of a
45* fitting located in the upper right hand side (as you look at the rear of
the engine) of the accessory case. I would like to take it off of the left
side where there is a 1/8 port located on top of an oil cooler return line
boss. Does anyone know if that is an appropriate location?

Thanks in advance for checking. You are correct about why I would like
another pick off point for the oil pressure. I think all of the dynafocals
are like that and I hope there is another way. I am going to call Lycoming
tomorrow to see if I can get an answer. Do you know if the oil cooler is
always pressurized? Maybe I can tee off of one of the cooler lines. I'll ask
Lycoming that too and let you all know. Thanks for the ski flying pictures,
that looks like a great time. When I flew radio control airplanes, the most
fun I had was off of skis. It was fun to see the snow wrap around the
fuselage on takeoff.

Oil pressure fitting
I just spoke with the folks at Lycoming. They use the rear upper right port
because all of their testing has been (and continues to be) done using that
port. Other ports could probably be used but there is no data outlining the
different pressures that might be encountered. Testing would be required to
define those differences (could be greater than 10 psi). The testing would
require one gauge connected to the standard port and another connected to the
port you wish to use. The standard port would be compared to the alternate port
and the data recorded. These tests would be required under all flight
conditions. He thought other people were using other ports to monitor the oil
pressure but understandably would/could not comment further.
