A couple of Elite questions

Post by Alan Hepburn » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:43 pm

I have recently started building an Elite, and have run into a couple of
areas where the instructions don't seem very helpful (well, more than a
couple, but I've gotten answers for the others).

1) The instructions tell you to put the fuel filler on the inside of the
top skin. The 2 1/4" hole isn't big enough to accommodate the filler.
Presumably they mean the outside? And in the venting instuctions, I see
a reference to flush filler caps. Are these available?

2) When trying to rig the aileron torque tube, I seem to have about 5
deg. too much up, and too little down, using the specified pushrod
length of 7 5/8". I don't actually have the aileron finished, but have
jury rigged the horn on a hinge bracket. Even with the adjustment all
the way in the short direction (which shortens it by about 1/8"), I
still don't get the specified travel. I also notice that the horn comes
up against the forward end of the slot in the lower skin, but comes
nowhere near the rear end of said slot.

Any ideas?

Wayne G. O'Shea

A couple of Elite questions

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:43 pm

Alan, open up the tank lid hole and mount the flange to the inside of the
tank. A much cleaner looking installation!! Stick with the "necked" fillers
as it gives you something to hold onto as you climb the ladder, tire or
fueling steps on floats to check your fuel level or when actually refueling.

As for the torque tube travel and the spec'd dimension of the pushpull tube,
I have never been able to make that long of a tube work. I think I use 6 5/8
but will have to check my template tomorrow and let you know for sure. You
can also take a piece of 1/2" plywood about 1" wide x 8"long and drill holes
in it at 3/8" intervals and play with it until you find a length between 7
5/8 and 6 that works the best for you.

Cheers,
Wayne

Bob Patterson

A couple of Elite questions

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:43 pm

Wayne's right, Al ! Those filler necks have saved <my> neck
several times on floats !! While I don't like to grab them, sometimes
that's the only thing between you and a nasty fall to the dock...

The flush caps are available from the factory, but I doubt
they make a discernable speed difference in the Rebel/Elite flight
regime. They DO make excellent water traps - I think Wayne has
found water in the tanks because of these caps. Also, if they do
collect water, and it freezes, you can have a LOT of fun trying to
refuel in winter !! ;-)

(I know, Walter - UNLESS you live in B.C., where it's warm !!) ;-)
