Firewall Blanket

Post by steenson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:34 pm

Good morning, all!

Have you tried other firewall covering options other than the quilted blanket
that the Murphy demonstrators appear to use. I'd appreciate some guidance
here.

Many thanks!

Hey Jeffrey,
Nope, the quilted blanket is all we use...works great on the SR monster,
where the firewall gets hot enough to burn your toes!

Bob Patterson

Firewall Blanket

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:34 pm

Hi Jeffrey !

If you want to keep weight & bulk down, there's a fireproof
material called "FiberFrax" (??) from Aircraft Spruce, that's only
about 1/8" thick. It's a white woven ceramic that is bonded on with
a silica adhesive that comes with it - both are suitable for EITHER
side of the firewall. It will reduce heat transfer, and can be painted
with HT paint....

If you want more sound absorbtion, after the FiberFax, you
could use the plastic "bubble pack" that many builders use everywhere -
in the doors, on the roof, as a 'curtain' to close the fuselage
behind the baggage area, etc. This stuff is used for barn & chicken
coop insulation - it's like plastic bubbles, with silver foil on
both sides, so it's good heat and sound absorbing. It comes in rolls,
at farm or hardware supply houses, and is LIGHT & CHEAP !! It can be held
in place with velcro strips, or just spray contact cement, and you
can also glue lightweight automotive upholstery material to it,
for a nice finish !!
