Renegade on tail dragger floats

Post by Walter Klatt » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:33 pm

Bet none of you guys have ever seen anything like this.
One of the local guys here got a little bored with
conventional aerobatics and float flying and wanted to
try something a little different with his Murphy
Renegade. I saw it this weekend and got some pics, and
even a video clip of it flying. It sure had a lot of
old timers shaking their heads.

Renegade on tail dragger floats

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:33 pm

Has he landed it in the water yet Walter??? Would think the stresses would
be pretty severe on the tail cone and the steerable tail float might make
for some interesting landings, yet I imagine you fly it on like a wheel
landing and then let the tail settle into the water at very slow speed!!

Is the gear retractable or fixed like a set of penetration skis??

Cheers,
Wayne

Renegade on tail dragger floats

He hasn't landed it on the water yet. Believe it or
not, but we have actually been experiencing a drought
here on the wet coast. As a result the rivers and lakes
are all extremely low, and he didn't want to land it
first before trying to find a place to safely fast taxi
and then take off from water. The best place for this
locally is Fort Langley, but because the Fraser river
is so low, the ramp is really rough at the bottom and
he didn't want to chance it. He did do some slow
taxiing on a canal, but it wasn't big enough to take
off or get it on the step. It does float OK, though.

Seems to land and take off from land real nice. It has
airbag retractable landing gear. Makes for a real
smooth ride on rough fields, with the air cushion and
bungee gear. He uses a an air pump with about 4
aquarium style valves to move the gear up and down.
It's definitely a one-of, but seems to work pretty
slick for his installation.

Take-off and landing on the land is the same as with
wheels. He can raise the tail first on take-off and
land main wheels first or 3 pointer. Of course, the c
of g has to be the same when on wheels only. He has a
100 HP 0200 in it, so it has plenty of power.
