Re: Prime and paint - need info please
With very careful prep and alumniprep33 + one coat of epoxy primer + one coat urethane, I had what looked like light filiform corrosion on struts and fairings after 11 years. Fuselage and wings are still OK which I attribute to a heavier coat of primer. Two primer coats are recommended by the paint ...

Re: primer
My take on it is that any two component epoxy is likely to be better than any single component primer. I used a two component during assemby but I question whether a two component is worth the extra trouble for assembling faying surfaces compared to a single component product. For exterior surfaces:...

Re: primer
AFAIK epoxy primer is the only primer that will retain adhesion on our flaperons when polyfiber fabric is glued on.
It also works better than anything else I've tried on my steel engine mount.
Seems to be stupid expensive lately though.

Re: Pitot tube
Mine is similar except on aft side of the main spar and inboard of the strut. Works fine and big bonus is that unlike the trailing edge and the strut, I've never hit my head or poked my eye on the pitot! 1/4" tubing is fine as there is no flow in the tubing. I think many folks with a few hours on a ...

Re: Corrosion proofing
I refuse to deal with the relatively toxic conversion coatings. I used a very very light coat of epoxy primer on exposed surfaces applied after partial assembly where possible. Don't let it hinder good surface prep of faying surfaces. A very light see through coating will not flake off if panels fle...

Re: Windshield
Coenraad General practice seem to be to use a U shaped rubber gasket. I wrapped a rubber strip around the edge that LP plastic sells. The fuselage will flex more than you might think and then the plexi also expands about 3 times more than aluminum when it heats up so you don't want a solid attachmen...

This has come up several times over there over the years so it is not uncommon.
Not a problem with my older 3 led style indicator so I never paid much attention but I think there are some fixes there.

Re: Rebel Verses Kitfox
Actually the subaru and I don't usually go a lot faster than 85 mph on amphibs and darn it all my burn does go up to 4 gph on amphibs and my range goes down to only 8 hours. You may tell your friend that. It is not technically a fib since I'm not in the USA and US 5 gallons = 4 imperial... I've alwa...

My stratux seems to work fine with the flightplango app on an ipad. Flightplango is a pretty good free replacement for foreflight. Does everything I want complete with all the Canadian charts and stuff as well. Haven't tried it with Android.

Re: Panel Wiring
But is there even the slightest chance you will hear the turn coordinator with the engine running? Many an hour has been spent chasing noises that could not possibly be heard with the engine running. I actually like my T&B noise as it reminds me when the master is on in the hangar. Congratulations o...

Re: Wiring a Control Stick
From what I remember, I brought wires to the cross tube at a convenient spot and tie wrapped.
Similar from cross tube to outside bottom of the stick and tie wrapped.
Up the outside of the stick several inches and in through a small grommet.

Re: Water Tight Floats
Amphibs have that channel for the front hydraulic cylinder above the second compartment and water can sit in the back of it. I actually put a drain at the rear of mine. Think it is the third compartment on mine that likes to drain water down the openings for the hydraulic hoses (rain) and also the s...

Re: Alternator to Contactor Hookup
ANL's are just slow acting fuses and they are indeed bidirectional. Assuming your B&C alternator has an external regulator then you can switch it off with a separate control switch. The classic architecture then is to connect it to the load bus side (not battery side) of the battery contactor. That ...

Re: Screens vs Filters (redux)
Newish automobile engines run different bearing material and dramatically tighter clearances and are much more sensitive to oil cleanliness. If you really research that 98% number you will likely conclude that it does not mean much. I'd google any info that Mike Busch might have online about filters...
